A Word From our President....
by Judy Teixeira

First of all, thank you for allowing me to serve as the SFRMA president for my last term.  It is both an honor and privilege to be elected the San Francisco Regional Management Association President.

SFRMA held its annual meeting on November 7-8, 2008 in Tempe, AZ.  We want to thank Pete Spencer, San Francisco Regional Commissioner; Patty Robidart, Deputy Regional Commissioner; Art Meza, Southwest Area Director; Rudy Macias, TSC Manager; Greg Heineman, NCSSMA President and Rachel Emmons, Greystone Representative, for their presentations at the annual meeting.  This year's meeting was a special event - it was the first time that Teleservice hosted the meeting.  Again, many thanks go out to Victoria Trujillo and Janie Smith  who both held the TSC AVP position this year and planned the meeting. Congratulations to all of the awardees and scholarship winner!  The annual meeting was productive and fun!

There are several new Area Vice Presidents (AVPs):  Paul Chan- TSC AVP, LA TSC; Jackie Chapin- Inland AVP, Fontana CA; Peggy Francis- Bay AVP, Redwood City CA; Hung Sa Kloeung- Northern AVP, Eureka CA; Shirley McDaniel- Southwest AVP, Phoenix AZ. We also elected Lourdes Esquer, Secretary, and Becky Archer, Executive Vice President.

This year, SFRMA will start a mentorship program.  We will be sending out a separate email message to request information.  We will ask for those who wish to participate as a mentoree (who request a mentor to assist with management decisions, request guidance for future promotional opportunities, etc.) and also request mentors (upper management who would like to share their experiences and "mentor/coach").  In addition, we encourage you to continue with your higher education.

We hope that you will join us on November 13-14,2009, at the Doubletree Sonoma Wine Country Hotel for the next annual meeting.  We will have GETA training and the SFRMA reception on Friday, November 13, 2009 and the annual meeting on Saturday, November 14, 2009.

"save the day"!

Please help us in reaching out to the entire management staff to get them involved in SFRMA

Congratulations and welcome to SFRMA –
Together We Make a Difference
!

The San Francisco Regional Management Association is a professional organization that strives to further the goals of SSA from a management perspective by having an open dialogue with regional and national leaders.  Many current agency leaders are former members of our association.  We are not a union.  SFRMA serves as a voice for field, TSC and ODAR management with the primary purpose of improving service to the public. Members can share input on many issues through their Area Vice Presidents.  In addition, SFRMA is a member of the National Council of Social Security Management Associations. NCSSMA and SFRMA have been instrumental in advocating for higher budgets for SSA; increasing the rate of overtime pay for managers and supervisors; influencing policy changes; streamlining procedures within the agency; and gaining improvements in automation and other systems enhancements that are needed for greater efficiency.

Here are 10 reasons why you should join SFRMA:

  1. SFRMA is a respected organization that represents your interests in a positive and professional manner. You will be joining an active and vibrant organization of your peers.  We provide an unfiltered voice for communications between field offices, TSCs, ODAR and other SSA components.

  2. You can make a difference.  You can raise issues and make suggestions for changes that can improve our service to the public, policies and procedures and our overall work environment.  Our organization gives members the opportunity to express concerns, problems and views through a collective voice.

  3. Membership provides networking opportunities for you to meet coworkers across the region.  It provides a forum for sharing information and ideas.

  4. You can participate in regional and national association committees and workgroups.

  5. You can participate in regional agency workgroups.

  6. You will be kept informed of happenings inside the agency and the organization that you might not otherwise hear about. Our organization serves as a channel of communications both to and from Regional and Central Office.

  7. If you get actively involved, you can develop your leadership skills and improve your communication skills.

  8. For career advancement, it provides an excellent opportunity for exposure. Attending regional annual meetings offers the chance to meet regional and national executives.  If you become a member of your Executive Committee you will interact with regional executives on a regular basis.

  9. Attending your Regional Association’s Annual Meetings is informative and a lot of fun!

  10. Actively participating in your Regional Association is fun, rewarding and great for relieving stress when the job gets tough!

You are not alone!

“Can You Hear Me Now?”
by Becky Archer, Executive Vice-President

My spin on the Top 10 Reason to Join SFRMA are as follows:

Having been in management for 15 years and actively involved in the SFRMA Council for 6 years, I have learned more from this experience than from any other source.  It equates to having a large network of mentors.  Sometimes you learn what to do and sometimes you learn what not to do.

Think of that person who has been your significant role model and then multiply it ten-fold.  This is the experience gained from SFRMA.

A visual comparison is the Verizon commercials with hundreds of people standing there to support you – “Can you hear me now?”

Our membership percentage has decreased in the last couple of years.  We believe this is attributed to the mass transition that is taking place in the Region- whether it is temporary details, shifts to new components or simply the rapid rate of succession.  This has lead to lack of information available to SFRMA in identifying all our new management.  SFRMA AVPs are not always aware of management selections, especially our new OS’s, but you are.

This is where your help is needed:
We need your help in being your office/districts recruiter.  Share information and encourage their participation.  Have your new management contact the Area VPs for more information.

Despite this challenge, our mission is still on path and is loud and clear in being the voice for Region 9 Management.

“Can you hear me now?”

Why I Am Committed to a Career in the Public Service

“I like you because you listen to me.  No one ever listens to me.”  A fifth grader once said that to me as I was volunteering with a student organization at Arizona State University.  This kid was a “behavior problem.”  His desk was separate from everyone else’s, and I could tell that even his teacher had given up on him.  I felt bad for him, so I decided to strike up a conversation with him.  We started out talking about music, when I had to prove I was knowledgeable about his kind of music to earn his trust.  I passed his test, and he began opening up to me about everything.  Sure enough, as soon as we started interacting meaningfully, he began behaving and listening better because he wanted to behave for me.

I thought, “If anyone had taken the time to talk to this kid before, maybe it wouldn’t have gotten this far and he wouldn’t be such a behavior problem.”  He was lonely and needing someone to believe in him.  The change I saw in him in just a few hours was incredible, and I began thinking about the impact I could have on kids if I got to spend days, weeks, or months with them.

Shortly thereafter, I got a job with a Boys and Girls Club, where I stayed for a year and a half, and would have stayed forever if I had not decided to pursue my Masters elsewhere.  I loved those kids like my own, and my favorite thing in the world was sitting in my office with them and talking about their days, school, their families, and whatever else they felt like talking about.  I formed lasting relationships with the kids and saw behavior changes in them as they became closer to me and the other staff.  It is truly remarkable how kids change as soon as they have a caring adult in their lives.

I decided to get my Masters in Public Administration so I could be a more effective administrator in programs such as the ones offered at the Boys and Girls Clubs or other after school programs such as the one I currently work for in Flagstaff, F.A.C.T.S. (Family and Community Teaming for Students).  I learned most things in my job at the Boys and Girls Club as I went along, so I decided getting a more formal training in administration would help me in future jobs.  Because of the impact I know I have had on young lives and the impact I know I can continue to have, I am forever committed to a career in public service.  I would like to always help kids, whether directly as I have in the past or more indirectly through advocacy programs or public programs that provide health, education, or other benefits to youth.  I have found my calling in life and pursuing my Masters in Public Administration is one step on my path to achieving greatness in public service.

My First Meeting
by Betsy Everly

Thank you SFRMA and the San Francisco Regional Office for providing the dynamic and engaging training on “Effective Leadership:  Eliminate 3 Toxic Elements That Get in the Way” presented by Sonia Aranza.  Ms. Aranza afforded us the opportunity to explore and reflect on the type of leader that we are, the type of leader we want to be, and what type of legacy we will leave behind.  Her presentation truly raised our awareness about ‘toxic’ behaviors, which at times are unconscious and small, and the tremendous impact our behavior has on our staff’s morale and productivity.  Those who were fortunate enough to attend Ms. Aranza’s training on November 7, 2008 in Tempe, AZ will always pause to remember that you alone, as the leader, create the environment of the office in which you work.  All in attendance will now carry the skills with us to be a STAR.  Thank you for providing Ms. Aranza’s insightful and persuasive training as the introduction to attending my first SFRMA Annual Meeting since I joined SFRMA in 2005!

 A message from our AVPs

Southwest
by Shirley McDaniel

My name is Shirley McDaniel.    I am honored to represent the Southwest Area management members of SFRMA by serving as the Southwest Area vice president.

I have worked for Social Security in Region 9 since 1976 and in the Southwest Area since 1978.  I am currently an operations supervisor in the Casa Grande Arizona field office.  I have held every possible position (even the extinct data review technician) in a level two field office including a detail as manager.  I believe my background in the field gives me the advantage of understanding the operations and the impact changes would have on the field office.

My heart is in the field and my desire as your Southwest Area VP is to promote an awareness of the field needs.  There is a tremendous need for a sufficient number of highly trained personnel both in the field and in the field support components of the Social Security Administration.  Additionally, we need to upgrade our computer system (looks as if this will be happening) and continue the advancement of e-services if we are to provide the high level of service the public has come to expect from all of Social Security. I believe that SFRMA is the place where I can serve and learn, thank you for this opportunity.

South Coast
by Penelope Baumann, AVP

Look for a meeting announcement soon for after work get togethers at El Torito in Orange and San Diego.  I’m looking forward to talking with you about your successes and concerns in this new era of “Stimulus,” I mean, “Recovery.”  As features such as iClaims and VoIP roll out, your input is critical so that issues are surfaced and problems are addressed.  I am so impressed every time the council goes to meet with Pete and the other executives at how receptive they are to our viewpoint.  This is your opportunity to bring up topics that you may be reluctant to voice through channels.  Our input to them is only as good as your input to us.  If you are out in the islands or otherwise unable to attend one of the evening meetings, please call or email me anytime to express a concern, make a suggestion, or just vent frustration.  I look forward to seeing you and/or hearing from you.  Hang in there!  Together we make a difference.

LA Metro
by Connie Lofton, AVP

On February 18 2009, LA Metro and the LA Tele Service Center hosted a joint SFRMA Meeting at the Beckham Grill Restaurant in Pasadena. We had 14 members in attendance and welcomed 3 members who were first time participants of SFRMA's Area Meeting. Paul Chan new AVP for LATSC expressed he enjoyed the meeting which was a new experience for him.

I would like to congratulate Raul Jimenez our newest member of SFRMA who joined in January, we welcome Raul to SFRMA.

The meeting was well received by our membership, lots of agenda items were submitted for the upcoming ORC meeting in June. There were door prizes that consisted of Godiva chocolates and movie tickets. Overall the meeting was a success.

Thank you for attending and I look forward to our mid year SFRMA Area Dinner Meeting hopefully a joint meeting with another Area.

Inland Empire
by Jackie Chapin, AVP

Thank you all for allowing me to by your Area Vice President for SFRMA.  I am still fairly new to SSA compared to most members of management.  I began with SSA in 2004 as a Presidential Management Fellow and have been working as a supervisor in the Fontana office since 2006.  I am excited to be a part of SFRMA – I believe we as an agency have a tremendous responsibility and that it is our ability to work together and communicate that gets the job done.

So far, Inland has had one area meeting in Riverside. It was not only a chance to learn about SFRMA issues but also a time for networking with other management members.  Our next meeting will be in April in Ontario on Wednesday, April 15.  More details to follow but please save the date!  We will cover the meeting minutes from our SFRMA Executive Council meeting with ORC held in February.  This is your chance to learn about what was discussed and to bring up ideas for the upcoming meeting in June.  You are the eyes and ears of the agency so please bring your ideas, your concerns, and your hopes for improvement to the meeting.

While most Inland area managers are already members of SFRMA, our goal is to have all managers in the association.  If others in your office are not members, please let them know about the benefits of joining.  And bring them to the next area meeting in April - dinner provided for all attendees!

Bay Area
by Peggy Francis

Hello my name is Peggy Francis. I have been a member of SFRMA since my promotion to the MSS position in 2002. There was never any hesitation on my part to join this active vital organization. I have attended Annual meetings as a member and now I have the distinct pleasure of representing the Bay Area as the Vice President.

I began working for the agency at the Teleservice Center as a clerical. I was promoted to Data Review Technician position in Hayward where I stayed a number of years. When the opportunity for promotion came my way I went to the Campbell office as a Title 2 Claims Representative. Ultimately I returned to the Hayward office and stayed there until moving to Clearlake Texas. This is a suburb of Houston near the Johnson Space Center. I worked in the Pasadena Texas office. After many years in Texas I returned to California as a Claims Representative in San Mateo. I was promoted to the Management Support Specialist position and then to the Operations Supervisor in Redwood City.

Every office has its own unique set of issues depending on the demographic breakdown of their area. I thank you for the opportunity to represent every group and every demographic. We are unique and that is what makes our group so powerful and dynamic. Together we will all make a difference in how each group is represented.

Cal Central
by Chy Vang

Welcome new SFRMA members! Existing members, thank you all for your input and participation in SFRMA. Plan to attend an after work get together and meeting in Fresno next month. Please come prepared to discuss any concerns or suggestions you may have regarding work issues, staffing, new automation tools, or anything else. This year has been very busy but I hope you will continue to provide suggestions, ideas, and participate. I look forward to hearing from you.

It was nice seeing some of you at last year’s annual meeting. Members who attended each received a book called “2600 Phrases for Effective Performance Reviews.” I have three that I will raffle off at the next meeting in Fresno. I have found this booklet very useful during the mid-term PACS evaluation.

Please join me in the next area meeting and I hope you can attend the upcoming annual meeting this year.

 Northern
by Hung Sa Kloeung

Thank you for the honor of serving as your Area Vice President for the Northern Area.  I am very grateful for your welcome to Northern, as well as your input on various issues and concerns on how we can better serve the public.  Please know that I and other SFRMA Executive Committee members have shared your thoughts and ideas with our Regional Office staff.  I urge you to continue to send me your ideas and thoughts.  You can call me directly or reach me via email.

Thank you for those who attended the dinners held at The Old Spaghetti Factory and El Torito Mexican Restaurant & Cantina in Sacramento in December 2008 and March 2009.  It was great to see you all.  I hope to see you again soon.

For those who were not able to attend the dinners, I encourage you to consider joining us next time.  This is a great opportunity to meet together in a relaxed setting, enjoy good food and drink, and engage in spirited discussions on issues that are important to us and the work that we do on a daily basis.

If you have not done so, I would encourage you to consider attending the Annual SFRMA Meeting on November 13-14, 2009 at the Doubletree Hotel Sonoma Wine Country.  The Northern Area is this year’s host.  Let’s show a strong presence in our own backyard.

If you know of members who have not attended an annual meeting before, please tell them about your great experience and invite them to come to the annual meeting.  This is a great opportunity to get rejuvenated, get connected, and set agendas for the coming year.

We have strong membership in the Northern Area.  Let’s make it even stronger.  If you know of a management person who is not a member of SFRMA, please invite them to join us.  Together, we make the difference.  And the more there are of us, the bigger the difference we can make.

Thank you for your support.  I look forward to meeting each one of you soon.

TSC Report
by Paul Chan

My name is Paul Chan.  I would like to thank all of you for your support in the SFRMA election this past November.  I am extremely honored to accept the position of SFRMA TSC Area Vice President.

I’m currently a TSC supervisor in the Los Angeles Tele-service Center since 2008.  After completing college, I began my career with SSA in 2003 as a bilingual Service Representative at the El Monte District Office.  I was promoted to a Claims Representative in the same office in 2005 before becoming a supervisor.  I was involved in many initiatives outside of my normal job duties such as being a facilitator for the Chinese Bilingual Training Class for the region.  I believe my background and experiences will be beneficial in promoting SFRMA, representing the management staff and keeping them informed of any news and updates.  I will take every opportunity to learn and to do my best.

Just recently in February, we had a joint area meeting with LA Metro Area.  The dinner meeting was very successful with many attendees.  I received many great feedbacks on how to improve our organization.  We were able to bring many of your concerns to the ORC.  If you have never attended one of these meetings, I highly encourage you to come.  It is not only a place for you to network with other managers; it is also a great place to share and receive terrific ideas to promote effective communications.

Thank you for your continuing support and being a member in SFRMA.  If there are any ways that we can improve any aspects of the agency, including policies, programs or workflows, I welcome you to speak up and contact me anytime with your issues, concerns, and questions.  I look forward to meet all of you.  Remember, together we make a difference!
